About Ethiopia Yrgacheffe Halo Hartume Grade 1

A new crop, newly arrived lot from Ethiopia Yirgacheffe and a beautifully prepared coffee.

Recent changes in the Ethiopian export laws have opened new opportunities to develop relationships with certain area suppliers who can now work directly with importers in the US and elsewhere. Mijane Woresa, who has worked in coffee for more than 30 years, recently seized on the opportunity and establish an export company along with his sons, which allows them to directly offer lots from their two washing stations: Halo Hartume and Worka Sakaro, located within the Gedeb district. Gedeb is in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia, named after its major town, Gedeb. Part of the Gedeo Zone, Gedeb is bordered on the east and south by the Oromia Region, on the west by Kochere, on the northwest by Yirgacheffe, and on the north by Bule.

The Ethiopia Gedeb Washed Worka Sakaro is sourced from 410 farmers who cultivate coffee on small plots and deliver their cherry to the Worka Haro washing station. On arrival, cherries are carefully hand sorted and floated to separate out less dense beans, then depulped, fermented for 48 hours, and washed and classified again in channels. The parchment is placed on raised beds where it is hand sorted again and dried over a period of 12 to 15 days.

Hand sorting is the final step before the coffee is bagged for export.

As a family owned business, Mijane and his sons emphasize social impact in the communities where they source coffee. They have invested in more localized cherry collection sites to reduce the transportation cost for smaller producers. They have also contributed to road construction projects that make travel for everyone a bit easier, investing in school infrastructure projects and making sure the children have equipment to play sports.

These are some of the highest grown coffees in the world. This lot is virtually defect free, nearly every bean roasting evenly. We think you will find it a great representation of the region.

Cup Characteristics: Classic Yirgacheffe notes that are bright, sweet, fresh, very clean, citrusy, especially at the beginning of the crop year. Hints of melon. Chocolate body. Crisp with lingering finish. Particularly complex lot of Ethiopian coffee, wonderful to begin with but further enhanced by extreme sorting.

Roasting Notes: This coffee is interesting over a range of roasts and profiles. Full City is a nice level for this coffee, taking it up to but not pushing fully into second crack. At City+ the floral/lemony character is better preserved while the body will be a bit reduced.
