{"id":255,"date":"2013-07-10T10:48:17","date_gmt":"2013-07-10T15:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.roastmasters.com\/blog\/?p=255"},"modified":"2013-07-10T10:48:17","modified_gmt":"2013-07-10T15:48:17","slug":"a-taste-for-expensive-coffee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.roastmasters.com\/blog\/?p=255","title":{"rendered":"A Taste for Expensive Coffee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Best of Panama 2013 internet auction was held last Wednesday 7\/3 and prices were overall very high and, in a number of instances, extremely so.\u00a0 By way of disclosure, yours truly was one of sixteen international judges who cupped and scored these coffees in Boquete, Panama in May.\u00a0 The competition and auction that followed is broken into three categories:\u00a0 Geisha varietal, Traditional and\u00a0 Natural process coffees.\u00a0 The Geishas and Traditionals are all washed or &#8216;honey&#8217; processed.\u00a0 Indeed, some of the nicest coffees anywhere are being produced in Panama, though this origin does not signify magic to the American consumer.\u00a0 Close to zero of the auction winners were from the United States, and this is often true of winners at Cup of Excellence auctions as well.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all of this award winning, expensive coffee goes to Asia where a taste for rare and exotic foods is firmly implanted in the culture, albeit those with the wherewithal to afford them.\u00a0 Witness Wagyu beef at $1,500 a pound, $1,000 a pound Matsutake mushrooms, the 1.76 million dollar bluefin tuna that was purchased in January, a mere $3,600 a pound or Fugu blowfish.\u00a0 This quest for unique experiences extends throughout Asia and is also being witnessed in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>At Best of Panama there were 47 coffees auctioned.\u00a0 Four of them attained prices over $100 a pound and 17 more coffees achieved between $20 and $100.<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-4\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-4\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1 odd\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\">Coffee<\/th><th class=\"column-2\">Price per pound<\/th><th class=\"column-3\">Category<\/th><th class=\"column-4\">Rank in category<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2 even\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Esmeralda Special Natural Ca\u00f1as Verdes<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">$350.25<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Natural<\/td><td class=\"column-4\">1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3 odd\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Kotowa Don K Geisha Nat<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">$170.25<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Natural<\/td><td class=\"column-4\">3<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4 even\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Los Lajones Bambu Geisha<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">$165.75<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Natural<\/td><td class=\"column-4\">2<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-5 odd\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Ironman<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">$160.25<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Geisha<\/td><td class=\"column-4\">1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-6 even\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Esmeralda Special Ca\u00f1as Verdes<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">$85.25<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Geisha<\/td><td class=\"column-4\">3<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-7 odd\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Esmeralda Special Jaramillo<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">$48.15<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Geisha<\/td><td class=\"column-4\">8<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-8 even\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Kotowa Don K Geisha<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">$45.25<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Geisha<\/td><td class=\"column-4\">14<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-9 odd\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><\/td><td class=\"column-3\"><\/td><td class=\"column-4\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-10 even\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><\/td><td class=\"column-2\"><\/td><td class=\"column-3\"><\/td><td class=\"column-4\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-4 from cache -->\n<p>In all, 14,550 pounds of coffee were auctioned with an average price of $19.88 per pound.\u00a0 Most of these were very small lots with 100 to 150 pounds.\u00a0 But the questions remain 1) who buys and can afford the most expensive of these coffees?
