Arrived late August 2009. Peru Ubiriki Valley Fair Trade & Organic coffee is cooperatively gathered from farmers in the Rio Ubiriki Valley Basin in the province of Chanchamayo, high in the Andes. The coop began following a 2003 pilot project for the quality enhancement of Peruvian coffee in this particular area. Toward the end of 2004 the project's participants decided to form a co-operative which they called Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Sostenible Valle Ubiriki (CACSOVU). The initial group was made of 73 producers from the Perené, Pichanaki and Rio Negro areas, in both the provinces of Chanchamayo and Satipo, who felt that improved organization and education would help commercialize their coffee, improve growing and processing toward increasing their income. Today, there are 280 members and they currently carry the certifications of UTZ Certified, Rain Forest Alliance, Organic, and FLO (Fair Trade) for various coffees they produce. The growers, through their pilot project and beyond, now put significant effort into retaining soil fertility and preventing soil erosion. They accomplish this by using organic fertilizers, shade management, using other plants as live barriers between cultivated plots, avoiding high crop densities, planting coffee trees over contour lines on inclined areas and other techniques they have developed. The coffee itself has now gained much more character as a result of the care that goes into growing it and processing it. Its piquancy makes it suitable to both Full City and French roasts. Cup Characteristics: Medium body, slightly sweet with mild acidity. Clean with well structured body Roasting Notes: Full City suggested for lighter roasts. This coffee is also well suited for dark roast enthusiasts as it is bright and hard enough to withstand additional roasting beyond second crack.
