Nicaragua CoE #2 La Union Estate

The #2 winning coffee from the 2007 Nicaragua Cup of Excellence is now available. Overall jury score was 91.58. The farm is owned by former military officer Donaldo Vanegas Cruz, who in the late 1980s finding himself unemployed, used some small savings to purchase La Union Estate. He took land that had been used for grazing and converted it to top quality coffee production.

Grown from 100% Caturra varietal at nearly 4000 feet, this washed coffee is completely sun dried. The tiny auction lot was only 8 bags and we have but a small supply.

Cup Characteristics: The International Jury descriptions: sweet (24), effervescent sparkling acidity (24), complex (15), honey (10), cherry (8), balanced (23), plum (10), round citric notes (9), smoky apple pipe tobacco (8), creamy (20), lingering aftertaste (18), chocolate nougat, caramel, round, floral, red wine.

In addition, we find the coffee to have an especially smooth, rounded chocolate mouthfeel. It has a complex, layered and sophisticated profile.

Comments - Nicaragua's coffee outlook is promising despite some of the lowest incomes in the Americas. It has the third lowest per capita income in the Western Hemisphere and the largest area of land in Central America. Growing and pruning processes have improved and there is potential for Nicaragua to increase its production. The Cup of Excellence has helped to discover some excellent coffee from Nicaragua and provides incentive for the dedicated efforts to produce same.
