Kona Heavenly Hawaiian Extra Fancy

New crop coffee just arrived (April 2008). We cupped a number of top Kona coffees this year and decided to carry a few a them. One is an Extra Fancy from Heavenly Hawaiian Farm. The coffee is raised from mature plantings of Typica varietal from the farm's original 6 acres which has expanded over the years to 20 acres..

Heavenly Hawaiian is a smooth, deep- flavored coffee with modest acidity. The farm is located in the North Kona District, Keauhou Mauka, near Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Owners Dave and Trudy Bateman diligently supervise the coffee crops from blossom to bean. Ideal soil and climate at 1600' elevation combined with consistent fertilization and pruning produce uniformly large flavorful beans. Washed processing takes place on the farm as well as sun drying. Heavenly Hawaiian is a member of the Kona Coffee Council.

Awards:

3rd Place - 2006 People's Choice - Cream of the Crop Cupping Competition
1st Place - 2007 People's Choice - Cream of the Crop Cupping Competition

Roasting Notes: Roast FC to FC+. Because of bean size and moisture content we would recommend reducing the charge size a bit. For example, if roasting a quarter of pound in a Behmor instead of roasting 114 grams reduce the weight to 100 approximately grams.

Cup Characteristics: Very dry and crisp. Concentrated and complex. Very large beans.

Comments

When Hawaii became a state in 1959 the price of land rose sharply and Kona coffee could no longer compete on a price level with coffee produced in less developed countries. Kona is also gifted with an unusual micro-climate wherein morning sun mixes with moisture filled air from the Pacific. When this air reaches the mountain slopes, it rises. Cloud cover then blankets the slopes at around 2,500 feet. Early afternoon brings rain. This climate with cloud cover makes it unnecessary to grow shade trees.
