Brazil Fazenda Santa Ines CoE #5

2006 Cup of Excellence Award Winner. This coffee has been packed in special air and light proof packaging and placed in boxes rather than sacks for extra protection and preservation. Boxes contain two 12.1 KG inner bags but you may purchase this coffee by the pound.

It is with great pleasure that we introduce a new limited edition coffee offering: Brazil Fazenda Santa Ines. This coffee was a Cup of Excellencefinalist in the 2006 COE Competition held in Brazil in early December 2006. Of the hundreds of individual coffees submitted into the competition, only 53 were brought forward to be cupped and ranked by a panel of international jurists. We were among those jurists. After 4 days of cupping and evaluation, the international jury advanced the ten top coffees for the final day of cupping. The jury rated Brazil Fazenda Santa Ines as the #5 coffee with a score of 91.43; however it was our personal top pick of the competition. It bears mentioning that all of the top ten finalists were outstanding, exceptional coffees, separated only by small scoring differences. Incidentally, in 2005 Fazenda Santa Ines was the #1 COE coffee in the Brazil competition and it set an auction record obtaining a price of $49.75 per unroasted pound!

The top 29 coffees in the competition were auctioned online in January. It was a lively auction with bidders worldwide. We were thrilled to have been the winning bidder of Fazenda Santa Ines. We secured the entire lot (24 bags), which we split with one other specialty coffee roaster. We are the only two roasters on the planet to offer this wonderful coffee!!

The Sertao Group owns the farm Santa Ines, located in the Mantiqueira Mountain Range in the State of Minas Gerais. The Group owns two other coffee farms, one of which was this year's # 10 coffee (Sao Benedito). The Group is highly concerned with environmental issues and the welfare of the farm's employees.

All coffee from Santa Ines is hand picked on cloth to avoid touching the soil. It is then washed, pulped and spread on terraces to dry.

Quantity is very limited.

Cup Characteristics:Fazenda Santa Ines is a very sweet, bright coffee with hints of lemon and clove. Its citrusy character is very striking. It possesses a delicate texture and a layered, complex taste. Very aromatic, it has chocolaty body and creamy mouthfeel with a long, sweet finish. A truly outstanding cup.
