Bolivia 2009 Cup of Excellence 6th Place Winner. Arrived here March 2010, shipped from origin in vacuum packaging. International competition was held Oct 5 to 9, 2009 and the auction of winning farms on November 19, 2009. Since that time the coffee was vacuum packaged, placed in a bonded warehouse and imported, having just recently arrived. The winning farmer is Luis Huayhua who is married to Zenovia R. Charca de Huayhua; she took 1st place in last year's Bolivia Cup of Excellence with her Cafe de Cordillera. The couple, in addition to owning and operating these two very small farms, are parents to three children. Suffice to say the couple's farming efforts are being recognized by both national and international juries. Cafe Central attained a score of 90.71 points, earning it a Cup of Excellence's Presential Award. He is now a member of the elite group of award winners who achieved a ninety plus score in Cup of Excellence competitions, alongside his wife won this accolade last year. Both farms are in Caranavi province, probably very close together if not contiguous properties and both grow a mixture about 20% Criollo and 80% Caturra varietals. Each farm has only 5 hectares for growing coffee, about 12 acres and they are located at 1682 meters (5520 feet). Coffee from this farm, Cafe Central, undergoes traditional washed processing and fermentation, all employing clean spring water, and all on the farm itself. While not certified as organic, the farm has environmentally correct practices including the use of organic compost made from discarded coffee pulp, organic barriers and soil protection. Cup Characteristics: The international jury described this coffee as having jasmine, cherry, floral aromas and flavors of strawberry, raspberry, orange and raisin. Acidity is described as citrus, crisp and brilliant. Overall it is complex, exotic and has a long aftertaste. Roasting Notes: Dense, high grown coffee can withstand, and almost needs, high heat. As we always say, keep the roast on the light side to appreciate the citrus and floral character. Pull the coffee before second crack has really commenced in order to bring out its real potential. | | | original box labels | |
